Queer Shakespeare Desire & Sexuality contains thirteen essays by different writers which offer readings of Shakespeare focusing on a broad range of queer perspectives. These perspectives encompass not only desire, sexuality and gender, but expand ideas of queerness into concepts such as queer nature and queer language.
Topics range from an examination of the different types of love in Two Gentlemen of Verona and the location of queerness in Cymbeline, to a discussion of queer nature in Macbeth and the drawing of an analogy between homosexual sex and the practice of money-lending in The Merchant of Venice.
As with any collection of essays, some readings are more convincing than others, but all are interesting and thought-provoking and illustrate the variation in the many ways in which Shakespeare can be approached.
